  * October 8, 1862 - The Battle of Perryville begins. This battle would prove to be the bloodiest ever to occur on Kentucky soil.

  * The Merrimack and the Monitor meet in the first naval battle between ironclad ships at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
  * General Robert E. Lee is placed in command of the Army of Northern Virginia.
  * August 17 - The Sioux Uprising begins along the Minnesota River.  It eventually results in the expulsion of the Dakota people from Minnesota.
