======The Privy, c. 1842, with 20th Century alterations======

The privy was built behind the [[carriage_house|carriage house]] to give some privacy to the [[dinsmore_family|family]].  There are four holes in this structure which could be emptied from the back.  That feature made it easier to make use of the waste as fertilizer in the fields.  Contemporary chemistry books and agricultural journals encouraged such use of nitrogen-rich human waste.
