Bobby was the son of Robert and Isabella Ferguson. He had a rough-and-tumble childhood in the mountains of New Mexico, but went on to graduate from Yale with a law degree. In 1933, he married Frances Hand, the daughter of Judge Learned Hand, of the New York Supreme Court. The couple had three children.
