Events

Boone County

  • Boone County election precincts are established.
  • The charter of the Burlington Turnpike Company is amended to require the road to be located so as to pass through Union.
  • The boundary between Boone and Gallatin counties is redefined.

Kentucky

  • Exercising its tie-breaking perogative for the first and only time, the U.S. Senate elects Kentucky soldier and politician Richard Mentor Johnson to serve as Vice-President under Martin Van Buren.

U.S. & World

  • English banks stop issuing credit to Americans, and the price of cotton drops. Both events lead to the Panic of 1837 and its subsequent bank failures and rise in unemployment.
  • General Zachary Taylor tricks the Seminole leader Osceola into coming out of the Florida Everglades. Osceola is arrested and sent to prison.
  • Alfred Lewis Vail, assistant to Samuel Morse, devises the Morse code of dots and dashes to represent letters, which Morse uses on his new telegraph.
