banks stop issuing credit to Americans, and the price of cotton drops. Both events lead to the Panic of 1837 and its subsequent bank failures and rise in unemployment.
General Zachary Taylor tricks the Seminole leader Osceola into coming out of the Florida Everglades. Osceola is arrested and sent to prison.
Alfred Lewis Vail, assistant to Samuel Morse, devises the Morse code of dots and dashes to represent letters, which Morse uses on his new telegraph.
