- Kentucky becomes the first state to permit suffrage of any kind for women; property-owning single women are given the right to vote in school board elections.
- The Cherokee Trail of Tears passes through western Kentucky, near Hopkinsville.

- Fifteen thousand Cherokee Indians remaining in Georgia are removed by federal troops who move them 800 miles westward on what will become known as the “Trail of Tears.”
- John Calhoun of South Carolina introduces resolutions in the U.S. Senate affirming slavery's legality.
