- Humphrey Marshall, the author of the first published history of Kentucky (1812), dies near Lexington.
U.S. & World
- President William Henry Harrison dies after one month in office, and is succeeded by Vice President John Tyler.
- Spain attempts to extradite the slaves who mutinied on the Amistad, but U.S. courts grant them permission to stay. They are defended in court by former President John Quincy Adams.
