Alonzo Gaines House (BE 118)

<html><img alt=“Alonzo Gaines House” src=“https://bcp.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/search/asset/33371/0” width=“300” align=“right” title=“Alonzo Gaines House”></html> The most imposing house in Hebron, the Alonzo Gaines House was built on Petersburg Road in the 1900s. Behind the house stand a substantial brick smokehouse and kitchen that appear to predate the house.

The house is an early example of the Colonial Revival style in Boone County. Built on the side-passage, double-pile plan, it features a cross-gabled roof, a broad facade with encircling veranda, and art glass windows with dentil moldings. The design of the house is attributed to William Batterson.
