Petersburg Soldier Vietnam Victim

Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Fleek, First Street, Petersburg, were notified last week that one of their sons, Sergeant Charls C. Fleek, 21, was killed in Vietnam.

Sergeant Fleek had attended Boone County High School and had worked at the Seagram Distillery, Lawrenceburg, Indiana before entering the service in January 1968. He was also an active member of the Petersburg Fire Department.

He arrived in Vietnam in July 1968 and in March was promoted to the rank of sergeant. His unit, the First Baitallon [sic] of the 17th Infantry Regiment, was scheduled for Hawaii three days after Sergeant Fleek was killed.

In February of this year, his father received a personal letter from Lt. Col. David S. Meredith, commanding office of the First Baitallon, praising Sergeant Fleek and a “dedicated, energenic and expert soldier.”

Sergeant Fleek's decorations included Bronze and Silver Stars, two commendation medals and a Purple Heart.

His two brothers, Amaul Earl Fleek, 28, Dillsboro, Indiana and Wayne Fleek, 24, Petersburg, have both served in the armed forces. Wayne completed a tour with the Air Force in January.

Other survivors include a sister, Carla Tracy Fleek, at home, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rymer, Mt. Orab, Ohio. Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is in charge of the arrangements.
