E.P. Berkshire House (BE 1155)

E.P. Berkshire HouseThe Berkshire House was one of several buildings in Petersburg built with brick salvaged from the warehouses of the Boone County Distilling Company. Built on a generous scale, it displays a broad porch with stout brick columns, and French doors to welcome river breezes. Portions of the wrought-iron fence were salvaged from the Petersburg Methodist Church (now demolished).

The house was built for E.P. Berkshire c. 1919 and remained in the family until 1955. An interesting condition of the sale prohibited the handling of coal “over or upon said lots”; this concern may have been prompted by the nearby coal yard, at Front and Grant Streets.
