Schools in 1960s Florence

In 1960, Florence had three schools: Boone County High School, Florence Elementary School and St. Paul School- a private Catholic school. By 1969, Florence had a total of five schools nearby, having added Ockerman Middle School in 1965 and Yealey Elementary School in 1963.

Yealey Elementary School

<html><img alt=“A.M. Yealey in 1945” src=“https://bcp.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/search/asset/22997/0” width=“350” align=“right” title=“A.M. Yealey in 1945”></html> Yealey Elementary School opened in 1963 and was dedicated to Almer Michael Yealey (1873-1962), long time Boone County teacher and principal. Along with being a teacher, Mr. Yealey liked to write newspaper articles about Boone County history. Mr. Yealey is buried in the Florence Cemetery, right next to the Florence Elementary School.
