Garrison or Garrison's Creek was named after the little creek that the community grew up around along the Ohio River. The farming community sat between Bullittsburg Baptist Church and the Ohio River. At one time, the community had a school and a grist mill. Well-known families from the area include: the Barnard Family; the Delph Family; the Stephens Family; and the Whitaker Family.

The town has been the focus of suspicious Underground Railroad activity and the home of Free Person of Color Mat Bates, who was accused of assisting Freedom Seekers as a Conductor.
