John G. Gaines House (BE 1150)

Gaines House”></html> Located on Front Street in Petersburg, the Gaines House resembles a shotgun house in form, but is built to one-and-a-half stories. The narrow facade contains two bays; the steeply pitched roof is covered with metal shingles. An old, undated photo shows a Victorian spindlework porch, since removed.

The house appears to have been built for John G. Gaines during the Civil War. It changed hands many times over the next 100 years.
