Eliza Hawkins/Simpson, c. 1855-1870
By Cathy Callopy
Born in either Louisiana or Missouri, Eliza was either the daughter or granddaughter of Jilson and Eliza Hawkins. She was born enslaved and came to the Dinsmore farm during the Civil War. The cause of her young death was not explained, but James Dinsmore noted the death and purchased a coffin for the young girl and she was buried in the family graveyard, but only fieldstones mark her grave.
