John G. Gaines House (BE 1150)

<html><img alt=“John G. Gaines House” src=“https://bcp.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/search/asset/29066/0” width=“150” align=“right” title=“John G. Gaines House”></html> Located on Front Street in Petersburg, the Gaines House resembles a shotgun house in form, but is built to one-and-a-half stories. The narrow facade contains two bays; the steeply pitched roof is covered with metal shingles. An old, undated photo shows a Victorian spindlework porch, since removed.

The house appears to have been built for John G. Gaines during the Civil War. It changed hands many times over the next 100 years.
