- The Cincinnati firm of Freiburg & Workum purchase the Petersburg Distillery.

- The Ladies' Confederate Memorial is erected in the Lexington Cemetery. It is unusual among Confederate memorials in that it depicts grief, not patriotism.
- The Central Kentucky Lunatic Asylum, later known as Central State Hospital, is established in Louisville.
