- Failing in his attempt to purchase the New Mexico territory from Mexico, President James Polk orders Zachary Taylor to advance to the Rio Grande. Congress declares War on Mexico.
- The U.S. and Britain sign the Oregon Treaty, demarcating the northwest border and ending calls for war with Britain.
- Brigham Young leads his Mormon followers west, outside what was then the U.S. border.
